Harried mom returns...

Jun today - 15 years old. Broody, rebellious, rude, self centred, unambitious and lazy - yet funny, caring, sensible and logical, very perceptive and in the strangest of times, very sensitive, both about others and himself!

Maddy and i think he has picked up the worst from the both of us. There are days when we wonder who is this person and what is he doing in our home?

And here I thought my harried days were done and dusted.

A new chapter begins....

Why I will never become a motivational speaker...

Amma, my favourite Maths Exam coming up!

Yay...Jun, atleast this time will you score a 100?

Not possible Amma...how can i.....

Jun!!! If you don't even aim for 100, how will you ever...blah blah...you must aim for the stars only then, you wont be left with a handful of mud blah ...and some more blah....

Amma, can i talk now?

OK...

The paper is only for 30 marks. How will i score 100?

We stare at each other for two priceless seconds and both of us burst out laughing.

Just one of those moments :)

The Philosopher strikes again!

Jun and I were doing पर्यायवाची शब्द  ('paryayvaachi shabd' - synonyms in Hindi).

We had just done पानी (water) - जल, नीर and something else that i dont remember because arjun's next statement blew me away. He said, " God is like पर्यायवाची शब्द  amma. He is one but he has different names and looks different too...but finally he is the same God.

Amen.

A lovely dream

Jun emerges from the bedroom after a nap looking all happy and bright.
'I had a lovely dream!', he says.
What? What ? say all of us...
I dreamt that the building opposite my school crashed onto my school and flattened it. School was cancelled for one full year!!

My idea of a lovely dream just got redefined!!!

Jun's Zen moment

Jun was having a shower when his zen moment hit him.
Amma, am so glad my exams have begun.
Eh? Said the Amma.
Yeah ma.... Only when it starts, it can end no?

...and the master bowed to the pupil ;p

Wha??

It was a family get together and Jun and I were admiring my mother in law and her two sisters. Dressed in their vibrant sarees, they made a pretty picture as they chatted away animatedly.

Suddenly Jun turns towards me and says, "Amma, if they start singing a song now and it becomes a hit, it will become a granny nomination, no?"

My son is a funny guy!

Relieved :)

My little zoo zoo

Jun: I don't want to go to the zoo with my classmates and teachers, i have seen the animals a hundred million times!!!

Me: But Jun, it will be so different and so much of fun when you go with your friends, no?

Jun : No No NO!

Me: OK, don't go. You can sit and study for the exam that's starting on Monday

10 seconds of  deafening silence later :

Amma, PLEASE give me Rs 175/-  I HAVE to go to the zoo...Please?

:)

PS: He had a wonderful time. The highlight apparently, was  a deer pooping. Sigh.

This day, that year

I had seen it a million times. The very pregnant lady freezes for a second, drops whatever she is holding and yells 'my water just broke' and is soon huffing and puffing away while the rest of the family run around like there is no tomorrow!

I couldn't wait for my turn to be the drama queen!

17th Jan it is, said the doc. I was ready from the 17th of December!
I waited and waited as each hour soon seemed as long as a day.
Finally the morning of 17th dawned and i hadn't had even a little cramp, let alone labour pains.
Off i went for my regular check up, waited in the crowd till it was my turn and finally, the drama queen emerged. Only, it was not me, it was my doctor!!

What are you doing here? Go and get yourself admitted RIGHT NOW!

An hour later saw me happily walking into my hospital room, unarguably the healthiest person to have done so.

The next morning (Jan 18) preliminary methods of inducing labour had failed. Every body else looked tired and hassled. I was doing just great.

Now they hooked me up to lots of machines and put me on a drip. After about 3 hours, i felt a dull ache. It soon intensified. 4.30 - 5.30 - 6.30 and the doctor said i was doing good but taking too long. (As though i could control these things!) She said, i am giving you one more hour to get this baby out on your own. Don't disappoint me! By now, i couldn't care. i would have done anything to make the pain stop. One more hour seemed like eternity.

To make matters worse were the other ladies who i couldn't see but could surely hear. The sequence was the same. Screaming lady brought in and about an hour later, unbelievably beautiful sound of a baby crying. Our folks who were sitting outside for a good three fourths of the day apparently got fed up of being given so many sweets while they were waiting for my big move! In the time i was in the labour room, about 11 ladies came in, gave birth and had gone on with life. I felt i would be there forever.

As the hands of the clock moved closer to 7.30, i heard that beautiful word - PUSH!

7.36 - doc holds up baby and says, its a boy.

If you are regular here at this blog, you already know how i felt when i heard that.

What i had not bargained for was that i was starting a new love story. One that has brought out the best in me and more often, the worst as well. One that has made me want to be a better person like nothing before.

Like in all love stories, i also know i cannot hold on too tight. I have to let go. Because he is bigger than me. Than us.

Our thoughts,  ideas, our strengths and weaknesses are ours alone. We cannot transfer them to him and cannot force him to see the world our way. Because he is bigger than us. We can only hope he will always share his world with us.

Happy Birthday for tomorrow Jun  :) You cheated me out of a good old fashioned child birth - but u sure as hell are making up for it ;p

More Blood!

Obviously the conversation we had earlier (described in the post before last - Red Blood Blue Blood) had not been satisfactorily closed.

Jun is down with fever and groggily asks :

Amma, vampires can bite only people who have the same blood group as them?

:)

(I honestly thought nothing could get funnier than the mosquitoes!!)

She said he said...

Is that correct amma?

Red Blood Blue Blood!

Amma, you said that if blood different from our own blood group mixes with ours, then we will die no?
Yeah...so?
Then when mosquitoes drink blood from different people, won't different blood groups get mixed in their stomachs and kill the mosquitoes?

errr ...

ummmm....

hmmmm...

??

(I wish Jun, I wish!)

More orangey!

Amma, if we pour a lot of orange juice out in the sun and it evaporates, will it make an orange cloud and give us orange rain?

:)

And then he turned 8!

On Jan 18, 2013 Jun officially turned all of eight years old.

He still cries when he is angry - usually at the drop of a hat
He still thinks all games are made for him to win.
He still looks like he is six
Birthdays are still awesomely special

One sign that he is growing up after all is when he helped us with the blowing of balloons for his birthday party. We had just bought a new vaccum cleaner and were experiementing with all its modes a few days before the birthday. As D Day grew closer and Maddy and I were trying to find reasons why the other would add  more value to balloon blowing when jun came up with this brilliant idea :

"Why dont we use the blower function in the vaccum cleaner to blow up the balloons amma? " he said. And that is exactly what we finally did. End result - Maddy and I were now jostling to get the chance to blow the balloons!!

So here is a very a happy birthday to my genius drama queen :)
